Kasturi Satta King – Escape rooms are very popular right now! You can make them at home from simple materials in your home. I have made several at home for my kids and they always enjoy them so much that I wanted to find a way to escape the classroom with my students at school.
I knew I wanted to create an escape room in the classroom, but I wanted it to be easy to set up and something all the kids could do together.

I will be using this classroom escape room again this year because it also works well if you are socially distanced. Children can work together, but from their own desks, to solve puzzles.
Another great thing about escape rooms is that they teach children about problem solving and cooperation.
This classroom escape room can be used in any subject in any class! I used this with my students as a way to celebrate my 100th day of school on the first or last day of school. Although I made this for my classroom, you can easily use it at home.
Always remember to supervise children when making escape rooms. Use puzzles that are age appropriate, safe and placed in a safe place in the children’s escape room.

I like to start each escape room with a letter on the door. Children get excited about escape rooms even before they enter the room. (Printable charts are available through Hands On Teaching Ideas – link below).
It would even be fun to post around the school so the kids can wonder and guess what the classroom escape room is like and what it will look like.
Since I did this escape room at school, I wanted to make sure there was a lot of learning involved. In this classroom escape, we focused on math, but it could easily be used in any subject.
When I made this escape room, one of my goals was to get my students up and moving. Part of solving the puzzles was walking around the school to find different keys.

When the students entered our classroom, they found a colorful box closed and sitting on a stool in the middle of the room. There was just so much talk and excitement about what everyone thought was in the box and how they were going to get it out.
I started by giving everyone their own board and markers. I wanted to keep the preparations for the escape room to a minimum and make sure I could use it multiple times throughout the year.
In mathematics, we were ready to review the material we were working on. So each clue to the room was a different math problem.
I started by putting a difficult math problem on the board. We discussed the problem together and then the kids got to work!

They had to solve the problem to get the first clue/key. Once everyone had an answer to the problem, we worked together to solve the problem to make sure we were right.
We then checked our answer with the numbers/clues on the board and matched it to the external location. (In other words, if the answer to a math problem is 33, the clue on the board tells us that 33 will lead us to the “front door”.)
(If you’d rather stay inside, you can easily solve the problem, match the answer key, and open the lock—all in the classroom.)
When the key was found, we returned to the classroom and opened the key box. Then we started the next question.

Step by step we solved each question and took off the strap one by one. You can add as many hints/tracks as you want and work through each question one at a time.
After we found our last key, it was time to open our box! Since we were celebrating our 100th day of school, the box was filled with a few goodies and games to fill our day.
This classroom escape room was easy to turn a normal lesson into a very interesting lesson!
Just for fun, I want to give the kids a certificate for completing the escape room. It’s an easy way to make the adventure even more special and a great conversation starter when the kids come home to tell their family about their day. (Below is the link to the printable files.)

Although this classroom escape room focuses on math, you can use it with any subject. It’s a great way to view content in a fun way. Regardless of what topic you want to focus on, create a series of questions for the children to solve.
I’ve even used this classroom escape room as a centerpiece and review for a novel we’re reading.
For the literacy activity and novel review, all the kids started with whiteboards and markers and I asked them questions about my book. The children worked hard to answer the questions!
Each review question leads us to a key. Each key opened our box one step at a time.
