A total of 22 companies expressed interest, but no more than six serious bidders due to the high base price of the new team. India’s Cricket Board of Control has allowed a consortium of three companies or individuals to bid on each franchise. British private equity and investment advisory firm CVC Capital Partners has won the rights to operate the Ahmedabad franchise for a bid of 5.625 billion rupees (US$700 million).
CVC Capital Partners won the Ahmedabad franchise at an auction held in Dubai in October 2021.
Ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, the franchise has drafted Hardik Pandya as captain. The franchise also picked up Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan.

The Ahmedabad franchise announced the name of its cricket team as Gujarat Titans on 9 February 2022.
Although the team was kicked out in their first auction as their auction methods and picks were deemed poor, the Titans wowed everyone with their performances and picked up their first win over fellow rookies Lucknow Super Giants. The win was the first of a campaign in which the Titans won 10 of their 14 group games to take the top spot with 20 points. They won their first qualifier against Rajasthan Royals where they would meet again in the final after a qualifier win against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gujarat won the final by limiting Rajasthan to 130 on a pitch they were asked to bowl first, and chased down the target with 11 balls to spare, including Shubman Gill winning by six off the first ball in the 19th over. Hardik Pandya scored 34 off 30 balls with bowling figures of 3/17 and a strike rate of 113.33 to be named Man of the Match. Critics praised Pandya’s captaincy, bowling and batting, and many agreed that he and his management made good use of their players and worked as a team to win the tournament.
The win meant that Gujarat became the second team to win the IPL in their first season, the first being their last opponents, the Rajasthan Royals. Nonetheless, Gujarat became the first team to win their first match in the IPL against a team they had been playing with since 2008. The win was also Hardik’s 5th IPL title and the first as a captain to win all 4 with the Mumbai Indians.
