Sam Curran, Ben Stokes and Cameron Green, who could potentially end up as the most expensive buys in the 2023 IPL auction, have been included in the second batch which will be released on December 23. The auction starts at 14:30. IST in Kochi with a batting line-up that includes Indian opener Mayank Agarwal and English pair Joe Root and Harry Brooke. The final auction pool was cut in half to 405 players from the original 991 registered players, with the maximum 87 available spots filled by 10 franchises. 30 of them will be foreign players. On Tuesday, the IPL announced the final auction pool, which saw the addition of 36 new names as requested by the franchises. A total of 273 Indian players and 132 overseas players – including four from associated countries – are part of the shortlist. There are 119 limited players plus 286 unlimited players. As usual, the auction starts with limited players, IPL divides them into different pools based on expertise. In an email to franchises on Tuesday, the IPL listed the order as: batsmen, all-rounders, wicket-takers, fast bowlers and spinners. The same will apply to untitled players.
Most of the players that franchises believe could spark bidding wars are grouped into the top three. The first batch of batsmen includes New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, along with Agarwal and Brooke. Williamson was the first player to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022 and was paid INR 14 million in addition to becoming the captain. But a poor season with the bat, coupled with an eighth-place finish, forced Sunrisers to overhaul their squad, which included Williamson’s release. Listed at a base price of Rs 2 crore, the New Zealand batsman could still generate interest based on his leadership experience as well as his ability to play impressive innings in high-pressure situations.

Agarwal’s story was similar. He was also the first player to be retained and captained by Punjab Kings. But the captaincy dealt a heavy blow to Agarwal’s batting as the Kings finished mid-table. With more than one franchise eyeing the Indian opener, Agarwal, who has quoted his base price at INR 1 crore, is optimistic of getting a suitable offer. Another player who will be convinced is Brooke, who entered the IPL auction for the first time and quoted a base price of INR 1.5 crore. A powerful batsman, Brooke proved that he can handle the conditions of the subcontinent by winning the Player of the Series award for the seven-match T20I series in Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup. He recently made his mark in the first two Test matches in Pakistan where he scored two centuries, the latter helping him win the Man of the Match award in the Multan Test.

No one was happier for Brook than his captain Stokes, who felt his 23-year-old England teammate had the potential to dominate all three formats. Sam Stokes returned to the IPL auction after missing out on last year’s tournament, forcing Rajasthan Royals to let him go. Listed at a base price of INR 2 crore, he remains a strong contender for the most expensive player spot thanks to his reputation as a series winner and leader. Another versatile newcomer that franchises have been eyeing is Green. The Australian’s powerful batting during the white-ball series in India recently made him an instant attraction. The green can float in the hitting order, spins well and can have good average speed. He also announced his base price of 2 crores. West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, who is part of the wicketkeeper-batsman group and has announced his base price of Rs 2 crore, will also be keen to prove himself. Puran, who stepped down as West Indies’ white-ball captain after a disappointing T20 World Cup that forced a CWI review, was released by the Sunrisers despite being one of their most consistent batsmen last season. But a good performance in the recently held Abu Dhabi T10 – 345 runs at an average of 49.28 – showed that Pooran remains an influential player in short cricket. At the end of the deadline – November 15 – to retain and release players, Sunrisers had the highest amount of money (Rs 42.25 crore) to auction. And followed by Kings (Rs. 32.20 crore), Lucknow Super Giants (Rs. 23.35 crore), Mumbai Indians (Rs. 20.55 crore), Chennai Super Kings (Rs. 20.45 crore), Delhi Capitals (Rs. 19.45 crore). Royals (Rs 13.2 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 8.75 crore) and Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 7.05 crore).
