Dadar ([d̪aːd̪əɾ]) is a densely populated residential and shopping area of Mumbai. It is also a central rail and bus hub with local and national connectivity.
Dadar has the distinction of being Mumbai’s first planned area and is also the center of Marathi culture in the city. It includes the western Dadar district.
In the 16th century, the area was known as Lower Mahim because it was located on Mahim Island, one of Mumbai’s Sev Islands which, after Bombay Island, was the most important throughout the Portuguese period.

The Portuguese Franciscans built a church here in 1596 called Nossa Shora de Salvação, which today is known as the Portuguese Church and is a popular landmark in Dadar.
The Dadar-Matunga-Wadala-Sion scheme of 1899-1900 was the first planned scheme in Mumbai. The Bombay Improvisation Trust devised a plan to decongest the city center after the plague epidemics of the 1890s. According to the mapping plan, 60,000 people were to be housed in Dadar-Matunga and a similar number in Seyon-Matunga. 85,000 people were to be accommodated in the Seuri-Wadala development.
The plan was the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, now known as the Veermata Jijabai Institute of Technology and the King George School, now known as IES’ Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya (now a group of several schools). The plan organized the structures and limited building into three floors with space between them.
Ramnarain Ruia College was founded in 1937 and Ramniranjan Podar College in 1939, completing Dadar’s transition from a residential area to a more diverse neighbourhood. Both colleges are run by SP Mandali. Dr. Antonio Da Silva High School, which was established in 1851 during the period of British India, is one of the oldest schools in Mumbai, located here.

Dada Sahib Phalke (in homage to whom the road is called Dada Sahib Phalke Road) shot his debut film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ partly in Mathura Bhavan, at one of his friends’ residences in Dadar East.

Vada Pav was developed outside Dadar Station in 1971, by Ashok Vaidya using Pav (Portuguese word for bread).
