Casino Theatre Aluva – Cinemas in some parts of the country reopened on Thursday after seven months, with few moviegoers wary of watching movies in an era of COVID-19 ‘touches’ with alternative seating, 50 percent capacity and packed snacks.

While theaters and multiplexes remained closed in states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Chhattisgarh, they opened in some places, including Delhi and Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, with strict DOS and do not follow the new normal.

India’s largest movie exhibitor PVR, with 845 screens in 176 properties across 71 cities, said 10 states and four union territories had given their permission. Accordingly, PVR started operations in 487 screens.

While they will resume commercial screenings on Friday, other big players in the business, Cinepolis and INOX, started screening films from Thursday, stressing safety measures including strict hygiene and social distancing.
Sanjeev Bijli, joint managing director of PVR Ltd, said that the next two weeks would be a trial for the theater network, but the cinema business would bounce back.

SVF Cinemas, which owns 13 multiplexes in Kolkata, will open its doors from Friday following all normal protocols, a spokesperson said.
In Puducherry, only one theater held shows and a mall in the city will eventually show in two of its theaters on Friday. Lack of new releases and the closure of theaters in neighboring Tamil Nadu are also factors.
In Andhra Pradesh, movie exhibitors closed theaters on Friday, refusing to go ahead with the government citing various constraints, primarily heavy maintenance costs.

There are about 8,750 screens in India. Of these, 3, 100 are in multiplexes and 5, 650 are single screens operating mostly in smaller II, III and below cities.
Several states, including Delhi, Kerala and Maharashtra, ordered closure of cinema halls from March 11-16 to March 31, 2020.
