Kardinia Park Stadium – Australia’s Pat Cummins says adapting to the unique characteristics of Geelong’s Kardinia Park will be crucial for Sunday night’s second KFC T20 INTL match against Sri Lanka.
The T20I double-header will be the first international match the venue will host, seeing the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars take on New Zealand before Australia’s men attempt to level the series against Sri Lanka.

The narrow ground (typically used for Australian Rules football) has a pitch set low from the center at an angle from northeast to southwest, to comply with International Council guidelines.

Traditionally, the pitch at Kardinia Park follows a line from post to post, but the 115m wide ground does not meet ICC guidelines, which require a minimum square distance of 137.16m from wicket boundary to boundary.
The subtle change opens up more square leg space, allowing the ground to meet the requirement that the shorter of the two square leg boundaries be at least 59.43 meters long.
“It’s a very long straight course here, like Bellerive Oval or Adelaide Oval in Tasmania,” Cummins said after inspecting the grounds on Saturday.
“Actually, the pitch is a bit slanted… meaning there are some short pockets at fine leg, but also some long pockets.

“It’s a matter of figuring out what parts of the terrain we’re trying to hit the scouts on.
The Australian team visited Kardinia Park for the first time on Saturday afternoon, but their visit to Geelong was cut short when heavy rain forced them to abandon a planned net session.
The ground has also hosted a KFC Big Bash League warm-up between the Melbourne Renegades and the Melbourne Stars and a tour game between the West Indies and the Victorian XI, both in late 2015.
Two members of Australia’s T20 squad – captain Aaron Finch and leg-spinner Adam Sampa – played in that BBL warm-up, so they will have an idea of how to handle Kardinia Park’s unique layout.

Growing up in the town of Colac, 75km west of Geelong, 75km south-west of Melbourne, Finch has a strong connection to the area. Finch plays for Geelong who play their home games near the main stadium.
Although Cummins said he was not sure what to expect from the wicket, he was optimistic that he would offer more pace than what he saw at the MCG during the T20I opener on Friday night.
“I didn’t really (know what to expect) to be honest, I watched a few AFL games on TV,” Cummins said.
“It feels strong, there’s a lot of grass, so I think me and Billy Stanlake will have a bit of rhythm and bounce.”

Geelong is approximately one hour from Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station, with Geelong Railway Station located 1.8 kilometers north of the stadium and South Geelong Station 450 meters to the east.

In Geelong, the Princes Highway becomes Latrobe Terrace (no curves required), making it easy to find the main entrance to the stadium from Latrobe Terrace.
Bicycles are not permitted inside the GMHBA Stadium or on the surrounding football ovals, however we encourage this mode of transport using the lanes provided.
There are currently bike racks in front of the Cardinia Pool (Park Crescent) and in front of the Sports House (Moorabool Street) with the aim of increasing the number of racks in the near future.

Public parking is available around Kardinia Park. Please note that some car parks are closed in case of bad weather.
A dedicated bus zone is located on Moorabool Street on non-AFL event days. The bus zone is marked on the west side of Moorabool Street.
There are currently no official taxi ranks in Kardinia Park, however taxis can be booked at any time by calling 131 008.

Divided into several phases, the renovations delivered a new south and west side of the stadium, which lasted from 2003 to 2019. Of course, some pre-existing parts will have to be dismantled. Today the stadium has 6 independent and combined stands that retain the historic oval shape, although football and rugby also have a home here. Part of the auditorium is covered, and the new roof is one of the most iconic elements of Kardinia Park.
