Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been instrumental in getting key performances from his players at the Chennai Super King camp and they will miss the talismanic skipper when he hangs up his boots, former England captain Eoin Morgan has said.
After a seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai, Dhoni on Friday night said he was in the “last phase of his career”, reinforcing the widespread belief that he will retire from the game after the ongoing IPL.

Morgan, who led England to the 2019 ODI World Cup title, is in awe of Dhoni’s leadership qualities and his composure on the ground.
“You can see how animated he is during the game, immediately after the game he brings all the information he’s picked up over the years. It’s amazing to watch,” JioCinema quoted Morgan as saying.
“It’s great to see these guys (teammates), they’re very grateful to have him as a leader, but you’ll only realize how much he’s missed when he’s gone.” The 36-year-old former left-handed batsman said the CSK players would miss Dhoni a lot if he decides to call time on his IPL career after the ongoing edition.
“That will be the effect. His (Dhoni’s) influence on leading key players in the team who are currently key players for CSK will be missed when he is gone,” feels Morgan.

“You go through the gamut of names, spinners, all-rounders, as you said, plug-n-play. Behind it all are characters, personalities, which MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming have done brilliantly,” he said.
The Englishman was also full of praise for New Zealand opener Devon Conway, who hit a brilliant 57-ball unbeaten 77 to steer CSK home against SRH on Friday.

But Morgan believes the franchise will keep faith in Russell. Speaking to Hindustan Times, the former KKR skipper said he doesn’t see Russell dropping out and said the two-time IPL champions are not too dependent on the all-rounder at the moment.
“I really don’t see that happening. Both of them who are sitting here as fans and have certainly spent a couple of years with him. What he adds is huge value. He scored last year. He was their leading goalscorer. One of the most impressive things about KKR in the current thing is that they are not dependent on him or Narine and we should not forget that they are also missing their captain,” said Morgan.

Morgan further noted that KKR are not relying solely on their big players this season and that takes the pressure off the likes of Russell and Narine.

When you look at the bottom of the table, these sides they just relied on their senior players to do well. That doesn’t happen at KKR,” said Morgan.
