Almost every state has at least considered legalizing sports betting, though entrenched political opposition and complicated tribal ties could prevent more than a dozen states from going online in the next few years.
In the early days of sports betting in the US, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM were the first leaders, with some brands going out of business after just a few years. Then there is Fanatics Sportsbook, which will enter the field in a big way in 2023. If you are not in a legal sports betting position, you can use sites like social sports betting Fliff or the site DFS PrizePicks for a similar experience .

Arizona passed its sports betting bill in April 2021, allowing online betting and some of the first sports betting in the country. It quickly became one of the most popular states to bet on.
The first online sportsbook went live on September 9, the first day of the 2021 NFL season. Eighteen operators currently operate in Arizona, including BetMGM, Caesars and FanDuel, and there is room for two more.
For the first time in March 2022, Arizona entered the top 10 for monthly processing volume (number of bets).

Earlier this month, FanDuel began playing live games at Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, while Caesars opened a sportsbook at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On February 22, 2022, the Arkansas Joint Budget Board finalized rules to bring sports betting online, expanding it beyond live events at the three casinos where it had been restricted since 2019.
The first online sportsbook went live on March 5 – a partnership between Southland Casino and North Delaware-owned online betting site Betly. BetSaracen, a product of Saracen Casino, was launched about a month later and is the only other online application in the state so far.
Arkansas law allows up to eight online sportsbooks, but national brands like DraftKings and FanDuel have so far been reluctant to join. To do so, they must partner with one of the state’s three casinos and share 51 percent of the revenue with them.
Where Is Sports Betting Legal? Projections For All 50 States
Colorado first legalized online and retail betting in May 2020, six months after voters approved sports betting in the November election.
Since then, Colorado has grown into one of the strongest markets in the country, with 26 different apps, including DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM.
It was one of the first states to exceed $200 million in monthly wagering and ranks among the top 6 in dollar wagering history in 2022.

Online sportsbooks must partner with one of Colorado’s 33 casinos to legally operate in the state, opening the door for more applications to roll out.

Colorado has one of the most operator-friendly environments in the country, though lawmakers have begun to tighten some loopholes for low taxes.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont reached an agreement in May 2021 with the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, authorizing the tribes, along with the state lottery, to operate online sports betting.
These providers were quickly joined by DraftKings, FanDuel and PlaySugarHouse, all of which went live on October 19 – just weeks after Connecticut began accepting live betting.
Each has at least one brick-and-mortar sportsbook, while the state lottery and Rush Street Interactive (which owns PlaySugarHouse) operate seven retail locations. Under state law, they can be open up to 15 years in total.

Connecticut is a smaller state and a newcomer to the party that is still a short distance from maturity. It will be interesting to see how New York’s recent launch affects its numbers, though it should continue to benefit from Massachusetts’ inability to legalize it.
Delaware became the first state outside of Nevada to legalize single-game sports betting on June 5, 2018, beating out New Jersey weeks after the Supreme Court’s industry-changing decision.
Delaware’s lottery-powered sports betting market still prohibits online betting, and there are only three retail sportsbooks left in the state — and the revenue numbers aren’t impressive.

Despite its fast start, Delaware’s small size, population and proliferation of digital sports betting options in neighboring states have kept Delaware relatively behind.

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in the Florida sports betting case in December 2022, with a first decision expected in 2023. Gaming attorney Daniel Wallach said the court was taking longer than usual to decide the case, suggesting it would can be divided on a decision.
Wallach also tweeted that in this case we could have a review and then maybe a Supreme Court decision. This means we may not have a solution until 2025.

Decision on sports betting in Florida? It has been almost 5 months since the day of the oral argument in the DC Circuit. The median time between oral argument and decision is between 2-3 months. The delay could indicate a divided court. But we are getting close to the finish line. Could be any day… https://t.co/V38SV4RxBmpic.twitter.com/VB34O33uQV — Daniel Wallach (@WALLACHLEGAL) May 7, 2023
Another effort failed in early 2022 when a campaign to put sports betting on the Florida ballot failed to gather enough signatures. DraftKings and FanDuel were the primary sponsors of the campaign, giving a combined nearly $37 million.
Florida legalizing sports betting in the next 2-3 years doesn’t look good, but it’s not completely dead either.

Illinois launched in-person betting on March 9, 2020 (just before the NCAA Tournament, which ended up not happening), and online betting in June 2020.

Indiana, the 13th state to legalize sports betting, has done well since Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a bill legalizing sports betting in May 2019. It has more than $7 billion in wagers, the fifth highest of all states.
Indiana law allows more than 40 online sportsbooks, but only 13 are currently operating in the state. Four more are expected, but so far the biggest players, including FanDuel and DraftKings, have dominated the market.
Iowa is home to more than a dozen online sportsbooks and has some of the cheapest licensing fees in the area – $45,000 for the first year and $10,000 per year thereafter. Iowa’s bet365 will be the state’s latest entry as the global giant looks to make its mark on the US.

Its monthly debit increases in 2021 immediately after the face-to-face registration requirement expires forever. Bets now range from $100,000 to $300,000 per month.
