I grew up near a small airport and loved watching the Cessnas and airplanes fly overhead and land there. In college, I wrote my thesis on the history of this airport and fell in love with the history of aviation. After my marriage, life took me in a different direction, and I also fell in love with maritime history. So you can imagine my surprise when I came across a globe from the Mariners Museum and Park Collection, signed by Roscoe Turner, pilot. My two historical loves have reunited!
The mission of Mariners is very broad: across the water – through our shared maritime heritage – we are connected to each other. The collection has a measure of everything, making it a unique and wonderful place. Of course, I’m totally biased, but our Collection is one of the best in the world!
The Most Exciting Reads Of Winter/spring 2021
I always find unexpected things in the Collection, but a globe signed by a flying aviator? What kind of communication is there in the world? Dig deep and the story is there!
First, we need to go back and find out more about who Roscoe Turner was and what he did in this world.
Turner was a pilot, but not just someone who flew from point A to point B. He was an aeronaut and air racer who wore a bright blue uniform in the 1920s and 1930s, wowing audiences with crazy aerial antics. He even had a pet lion named Gilmore, who often flew in the sky with him. That is until the little one grows up and is raised in boarding houses and has to sit down. Can you imagine the excitement Turner must have generated in every stand?

Turner was a multi-medal athlete. One such race was the MacRobertson International Air Race in 1934, which had airplanes flying from London, England to Melbourne, Australia. There were five mandatory stops along the way, but otherwise the pilots could choose their own routes.

Sixty teams took part in the race, but when it started, there were 20 aircraft divided into two categories: speed and handicap. Roscoe Turner and the pilots, Clyde E. “Upside Down” Pangborn and Reeder Nichols, flew the Boeing 247D. Nichols was a sailor, so his lack of a cool nickname didn’t mean he didn’t have a very important job! The Americans finished in third place behind the British team and the Dutch team.
If you enjoyed it as much as I did, then you’ll want to know if the plane they fly still exists! It is at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, which reopened to the public on October 14, 2022, after a complete renovation. For an airplane photo, visit this website!
To view today’s video, check out updates from the race below. Turner and his team appeared at 7:56 am and 8:59 am
, a Matson line ship. He left Sydney, Australia on November 14, 1934, just a few weeks after the race ended, and arrived in Los Angeles on December 1.
Ray Ban Review: Are They Worth The Money? Here’s Why We Think So
The most interesting thing about the world and the race is that they represent the changes in transportation at the beginning of the 20th century. The important thing about the MacRobertson race was to show that long air travel was possible and could be accomplished in short periods of time. Organizers also want to show that passengers can be as comfortable as other modes of transportation, such as these smaller and more scenic boats.
One of the air racing teams even carried three passengers with it! It almost ended tragically when the plane was lost in a storm in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. A radio operator alerted residents, who parked their cars on the side of the runway so that lights could guide the plane to safety. Fortunately, the team landed safely and were able to continue the next day.
Of course, it wasn’t until the technological innovations of World War II that airplanes were able to actually fly (pun intended!), and the era of the royal liner began to decline. Despite major efforts to create this change, it took some time for the airline industry to gain public trust and financial stability to move forward.

Airplanes weren’t the only vehicle in the sky at the turn of the 20th century, and this globe isn’t the only aviation-related item in our collection. Zeppelins were the most interesting form of transportation; the most popular thing

, which badly caught fire in 1937. For more details on this, visit our database here, and I will add it to my list of future blog posts.
Many items in our collection come to us in different ways, each unique to the donor and the item. In this case, the globe was an inheritance from Robert L. Hague, vice president of Standard Oil’s marine division. Here’s another great maritime connection: Hague was born in Rhode Island, where he dropped out of school early to join a fishing fleet. He sailed the Caribbean for a while before leaving the ship to learn the land-based trade, then joining another crew crossing the Pacific Ocean. Hague eventually began working as a superintendent engineer for Standard Oil in California.
Before World War I, Hague’s record card shows that he was an assistant in charge of steel construction for the US Board of Shipping. In this capacity, he helped convert ships into warships. Because of the experience he gained, he left the United States Shipping Board in 1920 to work again, this time for Standard Oil.
