The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule for the 16th edition of the T20 league on Friday, February 17. The tournament is scheduled to begin on March 31, 2023 with a match between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. Meanwhile, the clash will take place on May 28.

The opening matches will be followed by the second leg the next day on April 1 where Punjab Kings will play Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of the day followed by a clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. Sunrisers Hyderabad will face Rajasthan Royals in their first match of the season on April 2 and on the same day, Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Mumbai Indians in their first match of the season.
“The 16th season of the marquee event will begin on March 31, 2023, with a clash between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium – the world’s largest cricket stadium,” BCCI said in a statement.
It was also announced that all 70 matches of the league will be played in the 16th edition of the IPL. There will be a total of twelve positions during the tournament. Mohali, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Dharamshala, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Guwahati will be the host cities for IPL 2023. The tournament will return to the previous format where all participating teams will play seven matches and seven home matches.
Like last year, the ten teams are divided into two groups of five teams each. While Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants are placed in Group A, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings are in Group B. The T20 matches will be played at 12 venues with the Narendra Modi Stadium opening on March 31 and the final of the tournament being played on May 28 at the same venue in Ahmedabad.
Out of total 12 stadiums – Mohali, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Mumbai, Guwahati (Royals’ second home) and Dharamsala (Royals’ second home) will host IPL 2023 matches.
For the first time since 2019, the league will return to the traditional home and away schedule in India where each team will play a total of 14 matches. Each team will have a home support, playing at home for seven games while playing the remaining seven games at home.

The tournament will begin five days after the women’s premier league season ended on March 26 and will feature 70 matches from March 31 to May 21, across 12 cities.

April begins with one weekend that sees the first two double-headers of the season. On Saturday (April 1), Punjab Kings play Kolkata Knight Riders, while Lucknow Super Giants play Delhi Capitals. Sunrisers Hyderabad will play Rajasthan Royals, while Royal Challengers Bangalore will play Mumbai Indians on Sunday (April 2).
The matches will be played in two sessions with the day matches starting at 3:30 PM IST while the evening matches will start at 7:30 PM IST.
IPL 2023 will see teams divided into two groups – Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants in Group A while Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans is in group B.
Last year, Hardik Pandya led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in the inaugural season last year, defeating the Rajasthan Royals in the final in Ahmedabad. (anyone)
