Jitesh emerged as one of the key players in Punjab’s 54-run win against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Brabourne on 3 April. “Back then, if I had represented the team in state level cricket matches, I could have scored four per cent more,” Sharma said on the PBKS website, that he was too tempted to turn down the opportunity.
“Also, I can miss a whole day of school, as opposed to a few hours for football (Jitesh’s first love). I wanted to start playing cricket with these conditions in mind,” added Sharma.
He took his first bat at 17, clearing the team and playing for the state. Sharma also learned wicket-keeping while playing for the state, with little to no coaching, relying largely on his own footballing instincts. He said playing as a right-handed batsman helped with lateral movements while he was on duty behind the wicket.

“The lateral movement I learned in football helped me tremendously in wicket keeping,” Sharma said, adding that his footballing days gave him strength and quickness to bowl behind wickets.
Sharma, who studied with ambitions of joining the Indian Air Force, said he never knew cricket would one day become his destiny. “When I was young, I was mainly attracted by security. My background is very security related. My grandfather was a driver for Subhash Chandra Bose when the Indian National Army was on the border. After hearing these stories, I was very attracted by the ‘idea of getting a job in the Indian Defense Forces,’ Sharma said.
Though he plays for Vidarbha, his father is from Himachal Pradesh and he grew up hearing stories of people fighting wars to keep the country safe. “He (father) always talks about the country. He is always worried about the politics and the future of the country. So I was never attracted to cricket. I only started playing gully cricket when I was young,” said Sharma.
“I was more drawn to football because it was physically demanding. It just came naturally to me. So I played football at school and with friends,” Sharma said. But his school team wasn’t that good at football and the management gave extra benefits to someone who played cricket. Those extra perks made him lean slightly towards cricket.

“I will contribute as much as possible. I am a team player. If the team wins because of me, I will definitely be the happiest person in the team.
